According to the La Porte County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to the collision at approximately 12:46 a.m. Sunday near US 20 and Michigan Street. Authorities said the crash occurred several hundred feet west of Michigan Street in an area where traffic patterns had been temporarily altered due to ongoing road construction.

Investigators reported that Chapman was driving a gold 1995 Nissan passenger vehicle eastbound on US 20 when, for reasons still under investigation, the vehicle crossed left of center. The Nissan then collided with a purple 2000 Kenworth semi-tractor/trailer, striking the rear axle of the truck before continuing into the trailer.

Emergency responders arrived quickly and attempted life-saving measures, but Chapman was pronounced dead due to the severity of her injuries.

Authorities identified the driver of the semi-truck as 30-year-old Pawel Glista of Joliet. Officials confirmed that he was not injured in the crash.

Investigators stated that toxicology results are pending as part of the ongoing investigation, and additional details have not yet been released. Multiple agencies assisted at the scene as crews worked through the early morning hours to secure the roadway and investigate the circumstances surrounding the fatal collision.

As the investigation continues, Clemie B. Chapman is being remembered by family and friends for the life she lived, the relationships she built, and the memories she leaves behind.
