Benjamin Winston Obituary,  Death: Killed, Three Injured in I-26 Early Morning Crash Near St. Matthews

Authorities have identified Benjamin Winston of Winston-Salem as the victim of a tragic early-morning crash on Interstate 26 that also left three other passengers injured.

According to the South Carolina Highway Patrol, the collision occurred around 12:20 a.m. Saturday near the 133-mile marker of I-26 westbound near St. Matthews.

Investigators reported that a 2025 Honda CR-V carrying four occupants was traveling eastbound when the vehicle veered off the right side of the roadway and struck a concrete barrier. Benjamin Winston, who was seated in the front passenger seat, suffered fatal injuries in the crash.

Officials with the Calhoun County Coroner’s Office pronounced Winston dead at the scene. The three other occupants of the vehicle were transported to nearby hospitals for treatment. Authorities have not yet released updates regarding the extent of their injuries.

Emergency crews responded quickly to the crash scene, where traffic disruptions continued as first responders worked overnight to assist the injured and clear debris from the interstate.

At this time, investigators have not determined what caused the vehicle to leave the roadway. The crash remains under active investigation, and officials say additional information may be released as the inquiry continues.
