Virginia State Police are investigating a fatal ATV crash that claimed the life of 41-year-old Melvin Jerome-Sterling Lawson of Spotsylvania County on Saturday night in Westmoreland County. According to investigators, troopers responded at approximately 8:12 p.m. to Rose Tucker Road, west of Tucker Hill Road, where Lawson’s 2022 Can-Am Renegade 1000R X MR left the roadway and struck a tree. Lawson was ejected from the ATV and pronounced deceased at the scene. No other vehicles were involved in the crash.
Preliminary findings released by Virginia State Police indicate that speed was a contributing factor in the collision. Authorities also confirmed Lawson was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash. The ATV sustained catastrophic damage after leaving the eastbound lane and colliding with a large tree along the shoulder of the rural roadway.
Crash reconstruction specialists continue to examine the circumstances surrounding the incident, including roadway conditions, vehicle mechanics, and possible contributing factors such as driver distraction or impairment. Toxicology testing is pending as part of the standard investigative process.
